The International Golf Club, Nicosia (IGCN), started life in 1988 as the United Nations Golf Club, when 6 holes were hacked out of the surrounding trees and bushes by enthusiastic golf starved players on part of the UN Protected Area surrounding what was until 1974 the Nicosia International Airport.

The original members of the UNGC were military and civilian staff who were based in Cyprus as part of the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). Over the years as UN staff numbers have diminished, membership came to be offered to diplomatic staff and non-military civilians living in Cyprus who were only too pleased to take advantage of the golfing facility offered in Nicosia which is in the heart of Cyprus. It has to be noted that in 1988 there were no commercial golf courses on the island and the game was played on the courses built on the British Sovereign Bases of Dhekelia, Episkopi, and Akrotiri in addition to UNGC in Cyprus.

The club was renamed the International Golf Club Nicosia (IGCN) in 2003, a change that reflected the International membership of the club. We had members from many countries that included England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, France, Canada, USA, Argentina and of course Cyprus. This International profile remains to this day and we encourage new members regardless of nationality to share in our “International” experience.

The course has been extended over the years, and now consists of the required 18-holes. We do however play 7 of the holes from a different tee box, but in essence we have an 18-hole course with 11 greens (we refer to them as browns). The course has been course rated by the European Golf Association and is currently 5,991 yards in length (gents) and 4,959 yards in length (ladies). The par of the course is 72 both gents and ladies.

The club is very much “hands on” with the membership contributing to the upkeep of the clubhouse and course through various “maintenance days”. These “maintenance” days are very important to the club as it assists in the upkeep of the course and club facilities and in addition brings the membership closer together. All members are encouraged to assist in these special days.

The club is affiliated to the Cyprus Golf Federation (CGF) and operates under the European Golf Association (EGA) rules and handicapping system.

The club is accessible to the general public only by way of an invitation from a club member. All members are issued with passes that allow access to the UNPA and the Governing Body at IGCN works closely with the UN senior staff to ensure the membership conform to the restrictions placed upon them by the UN for use of the UN facilities offered to the club.
